Sport that is played on a rectangular field, plain, which is divided by an intermediate network. The land can be outdoor or indoor courts as well as in different types of surfaces such as artificial grass, clay, cement or wood flooring. It is played between two players (singles) or two pairs (doubles) using rackets which hit a ball back and forth across the field by passing over the net.
The name of the sport comes from the word "tenez" of the French language referring to the phrase There goes!, As this is the term used by players to prevent the Frenchmen rivals that is about to throw the ball. In English the word became "Tennis".
It is a popular sport, highlighted in world and Olympics. This game consists better known as games and sleeves called sets. Won the set who get victory over six games, provided you keep two games lead over the rival team.
The first games of ball with racket which has reference date from ancient China and gave rise to Badminton. However, it is thought that tennis originated from a game called “Jeu de Paume" (game of the palm) which is hitting the ball with their hands protected by gloves.
The tennis was invented in 1873 through the British commander Walter Clopton Wingfield who, a year laterestablished the first rules of the game based on badminton, but expanding both the size of the track, as the height of the net, addition to using a different scoring system. Although originally called the sport Sphairistike, Greek word for "playing ball" because that was the basis which was based in an ancient Greek game for the creation of the sport. After players preferred to call themselves “tennis on the lawn” or simply "tennis" because it was easier to pronounce. Today is known as the "white sport" because of the color of the uniforms.
At the beginning it was an elitist sport for the aristocracy since was practiced gentlemen and ladies of the court, even in France during the XIV century became known as the "Sport of Kings." The expansion of its practice among the subjects of the people bothered to King Louis X to the point where play was prohibited a few years.
In 1877, the first male amateur championship was held at the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Clubde Wimbledon, Great Britain, while the women began participating in 1884. With recognition of the sport worldwide soon appeared tournaments and championships including the American Championship (USA, 1881), the French Championship (1891), Davis Cup (1900), the Australian Championships (1905), Wightman Cup (1923) and the Federation Cup (1962).
The sport was institutionalized in 1912 when was created the International Tennis Federation. Interestingly, this had been admitted years before the Olympics in Seoul Games in 1988. Today is one of the most popular sports and is practiced by people of all ages.
