Rugby

A gentleman's game

Also known as rugby football because its rules were developed in the college town of Rugby, England. Rugby is an outdoor contact sport that is played in teams of 7, 13 or 15 players on a rectangular grass field whose measures are up to 100 meters long and 70 wide meters. The ball is oval shaped and is made of leather or a synthetic material very similar, its weight is lower than 500 grams. The game usually last 80 minutes but at youth level (under 19 years) this time is reduced 10 minutes.

The goal of the game is to obtain a higher amount of points than the opponent. You can make points by doing a Try (5 points when the ball get in the "zone mark" of the adversary), Try Penal (5 points awarded when the opposing team wanting to avoid imminent Try commits an offense and the referee penalizes it) Drop Goal (3 points throwing the ball between the posts by a kick), Goal Penal (3 points) or a conversion (2 points, kick awarded after performing a try).

This sport is very popular in the British Isles and countries with British influence.

It was in England where soccer was the favorite among students, many of the schools in Britain practiced this sport but in very different ways since the interpretation of its rules varied according to individual convenience. It was in 1823 when one of the schools in the town of Rugby (England), a student named William Webb Ellis picked up the ball with his hands and decided to run to the opposite goal halfway through soccer practice. The reaction of the opponents was trying to bring him down before he reached his goal, thus creating the basis of Rugby. The rules of rugby as a sport has evolved, and the practice thereof was spreading around the world.

In Mexico, the Rugby Union was first played in the 30's, when British companies exploiting Mexican oil. At that time there were a couple of teams composed entirely of foreigners who were fighting regularly in order to remember the sport they had left behind in their continent.

After the oil expropriation at the hands of Cárdenas, the British left their country and the Rugby longer practiced here. It was not until 1971 that Mr. Walker Irvine took the initiative to re-enter the rugby in the Reforma Athletic Club, an association of English origin like him. That was how he returned to Mexico Rugby.

It is noteworthy to mention that football has its origins in Rugby.

Rules are basically “always pass the ball to the back, advanced passes are prohibited, the tackles must be below the chest”. The annotations are called Try and worth 5 points, and conversion kick is worth 2 points, Penal or drop kick is another way to score and these are worth 3 points, two 40-minute play in the mode of Union and two-time 7 minutes played in the form of seven.
