Although the art of fighting with a sword had been forced education in the Roman legions, it is stated that fencing had its origins in the Middle Ages when the sword was used primarily as a defensive weapon to break shields and attack knights with shields. When is shown the gunpowder and firearms, edged weapons were moved to the field of entertainment and competition.

In Spain, the sword-fighting begins with the appearance of " El Manejo de las Armas de Combate” (“The Management of Combat Arms"), treaty of the teacher D. Pedro de la Torre. It was here that had its peak with the appearance of firearms, which resulted in the disappearance of armor, which won the largest number of fans who carried swords as part of an outfit or garment chivalry, as well as techniques that were adopted and increased complexity for the defense of Honor, which appeared at various schools throughout Europe.

In the XIXth century duels were forbidden and the arts of fencing for sporting purposes taught only by adopting the French language in the terminology of the regulations, in addition to the clothing of the handles, the glove, chest protector and mask of wire mesh.

Became part the Olympic program in the games of 1896 (Athens) and was until 1913 when it was created the International Fencing Federation, who so far organizes major competitions and is responsible for the Official Rules for these tests. Currently uses three types of weapons made of tempered steel, foil, sword and saber.
