Fight, rhythm and technique

Capoeira is a cultural expression of the struggle of Afro-Brazilian origin in which two alleged rivals take part and perform a series of choreographies in the center of a circle of people while playing background music for the "battle".

Players must simulate evading movements, defense and attack, making a beautiful blend of dance and martial arts. They try to demonstrate skill and strength, the partner should help the "adversary" to show off.

Capoeira is characterized by continuous swinging movements keeping the center of gravity out of focus, making it an excellent cardiovascular exercise. Achieving the art requires several hours of training.

It can be taken as part of a dance, rhythmic dialogue with a partner to the music of traditional instruments and at the same time, fight disguised as a strategy of attack and defense movements.

It is usually practiced within a circle of people called "Roda", people around watching and waiting their turn to "play". Whether you are a player or a spectator, you have to give energy to the roda either applauding or answering the chorus of the songs. The instruments used are the Agogô, the Pandero, the atabaque (African conga type drum), and the berimbau that is the most important because it is who tells players how to play, slow, fast or aggressive.

Emerged between the XVI and XVII centuries as an attempted revolution of African slaves against the control of the Portuguese colony in Brazil, as these were forbidden to exercise in a different way to forced labor, although the colonizers did not interfere between their cultural rituals. The techniques developed from African land and probably finished consolidated in Brazil, where they devised mix it between dance and music in order to disguise the combat training and teaching from one partner to another. That's how Capoeira became a form of struggle against the oppressors, a symbol of freedom, a gun disguised as dance.

When slavery was abolished in the late XIX century, the capoeira fighters ceased to have a place in society, it past a long time to bring back their customs and dances.

Currently a roda (Capoeira session) is a show, a performance by dancing fighters which evolve to the rhythm of the instruments and chants in a circle of other wrestlers, spectators and musicians. Capoeira was declared the national sport of Brazil in 1974.

In Mexico arrived in the year 1992 with the Argentine maestro Mariano Andrade, who participated with their students in the First National Capoeira Encounter in San Francisco, California.
